CASE STUDY

A/B Usability Testing

Understanding customer needs and preferences in the arrangement and display of decimal numbers in tabular columns across bioreactor applications.

Study Overview

Questionnaire after the usability testing

Business Goal

To understand our customer's needs and preferences in the arrangement and display of decimal numbers in a column. Tabular columns are present on all pages with over 50% weightage.

Users Expectation

To more readily scan and compare the numbers in the column — Easier + Faster.

Objectives

  • To get additional clarity on scope

  • Setting expectations now for what to test reduces misunderstandings later

  • Development can be planned based on the priorities of the recommended changes

Scenarios

  • Consistently display values with the same decimal places in columns to standardize formatting

  • Retain the decimal values as they were entered by the users (Current implementation)

  • The possibility to adjust the display precision from what is shown through excel format cells

Findings

  • 5 decimals is too much to comprehend

  • Preferred up to 2 decimal precisions

  • Maintain decimal precisions throughout — Ambr 15 values are relatable in ml, they hardly put decimals in litres

  • Displayed ranges and allowed precisions are different.

Ease and Effectiveness

  • Were they able to scan and read the decimal numbers easily?

  • How long does it take them to read the decimal numbers?

  • Does the structure and organisation of the navigation of the decimal in the column match the user's expectations?

  • Do they find their need easily?

  • Did the decimal content match what users want or need?

  • Can users find & read what they need? Did they understand the values?

  • Do they want to relate Reference and Target scale values in the Summary table? If yes, were they able to?

Hand Over Steps

  • Made relevant changes to user experience and design based on the research findings

  • Development team to triage and prioritize inputs for implementation
